Joe team return after successfully repelling a Cobra terrorist attack on the Statue of Liberty only to have the President shut them down for putting the public in harm's way. A great gut punch would be to have a victorious G.I.

The issues and story arc might not have been fully fleshed out by the time of the movie development, but a civil war arc isn't exactly rocket science (and much of it would have been laid out already by following this proposed plotline).įourth, you can introduce things like Syntoids or BATs being swapped in to replace world and/or military leaders, which always made for great episodes in Season 1. Third, by building to a Cobra Civil War as the main Cobra conflict, you can pretty much pull in much of what they did on the Marvel comic. This falling out would lead to a Cobra Civil War. This "oversight" could have paid off in a huge way when Cobra Commander and Company return to Cobra Island and get lit into by Serpentor (an existing part of the movie that could have been massaged to incorporate CC's falling out with Cobra Command). Yes, this was because the film was in development alongside Season 2, so Serpentor had not been fleshed out yet, but kids didn't really know that back then.
Second, you only ever see the "traditional" Cobra attack the Statue of Liberty, aka Cobra Commander and no Serpentor. Like, punching a news camera and flying in a time bomb bad. The ingredients for an engaging movie are already sewn into that introduction.įirst, you have Cobra trying to do its best at raising terror at a national monument and icon of America (which had just been reopened after extensive refurbishment). Yes, the movie had issues in development, and yes, Duke's death was ham-fistedly changed because of Transformers fallout, but Cobra-La was a slap in the face to the kids who supported the G.I. The introduction scene animation and action were insanely good for the bizarre movie that followed.
Pretty much anything would be better than what kids in 1987 watched. TL:DR = Cobra La is the pits and completely derailed the cartoon mythology that had been created up to that point.
